What kind of bike do you ride? I ride an old Trek Multi-track that I inherited from my mother-in-law. It stayed in my garage for years until I moved and started riding it to work.
How long have you been biking? When I was a kid I rode my bike Summer and Fall. In Wisconsin it was usually too snowy to ride in the Winter and early Spring. But when the roads and sidewalks were clear me and my friends would go on "bike hikes" all over the suburbs north of Milwaukee.
In what ways do you use your bike? I commute to work most days. I go to the closest grocery store with it unless I'm buying more than I can carry, which is a lot. I ride to the pub and some meetings. The only fun/leisure riding I've done is a couple Midnight Mystery and Naked Bike Rides.
How would you describe your current style in 5 words or less? Comfortable, eclectic, grunge-hippy librarian.
What are the best and worst parts of getting there by bike? Splatter of any kind is definitely the worst. The best is seeing the early day over the river change with the seasons.
Do you think there’s anything different about the way men and women bike? I think maybe men might be more prone to ride alone at night without any lights. But I know some women who aren't well lit too.
What’s your idea of the perfect winter day? Clear and cold. Some dry snow. Everything quiet except the wind.
How do you feel about helmets? I'm always afraid that the one time I don't wear one will be the time something horrible happens, so I wear one all the time.
If someone you knew wanted to start riding to work (or play) instead of driving, what advice would you give him or her? Start by figuring out the route you are going to take. Not all locations have easy bike access. The bike maps show what are safe paths and where difficult areas are. Sometimes going out of your way a bit to get on a bike boulevard is the best thing to do. Make sure you have lights.
Where did you grow up and (if not Portland) what brought you here? I grew up in Wisconsin and came to Portland for college. After that I lived in New York and LA, but came back to Portland once I had kids.
You have some incredible Vintage coats, how long have you been collecting? Where did you get the fur collared one? Thanks. I have to attribute most of my best coat and other 2nd-hand finds to my friend Anne Marie. She found the fur coat at an estate sale in the area and took me back on Sunday when it was 1/2 price. When I protested that I wouldn’t wear it, she told me I couldn't afford not to buy it. She's an artist with an eye for color and shape and helps me shop. When I wear things she picks out, I get more compliments on how I look than when I wear what I pick out. But sometimes I'm stubborn and wear what I like, even if it might not look the most stylish or flattering.
What’s your favorite meal to make at home? I eat out a lot, but usually end up cooking something savory on Sunday that I can reheat during the week.
Tell me the story behind that face in the tree (behind your apartment)…
My friend Jack Lee created that tree spirit to watch and look over me.
